I got this reel idea from @annacahillphotography - go watch her video for her original points as I am simply adding to them. Second shooting is such an amazing and vital role so here are some things you can do in order to be the best second shooter:

1. The main goal of your role is to be helpful, not just with photography. As a second shooter, I have grabbed supplies, people, checked a location, etc. I am there to be helpful to the lead and to make the day easier for them. If I need to photograph cocktail hour while they are doing bride & groom sunset photos then that is what I’ll do.

2. Do NOT advertise yourself at the wedding if you are the second shooter. This wedding is for your lead and you are there to be helpful. The wedding is not an opportunity to make business connections with the guests. Take this time to develop a great relationship with the lead and have amazing creative collaboration with them.

3. It is great to connect with other vendors and follow each other on social media as the second shooter, but please ask them not to tag you in posts as the photographer. I have met some amazing vendors who have tagged me as the photographer for the wedding and had to politely ask them to take it down or change the tag. It is just the polite thing to do for your lead.

4. Make sure you post the photos after the lead delivers the gallery and do NOT tag the couple. If the photographer allows posting in their contract, use the photos as a way to advertise your work without taking away from your lead. Every lead photographer has different ways to go about this so always check in with them beforehand.

5. Have fun and use this time to learn. Meeting and working with such talented photographers (as the lead or second shooter) is an amazing experience. I have learned something new every time I have worked with another photographer and carry it with me for every wedding.

The bride wasn’t big on details but I insisted to let me at least take her ring and get her some pretty photos of it, and I am so glad I did!

I really just want couples to come have fun and bond. Let me know if you’ve ever apologized for these things before your photoshoot.
